Our
Field Journals cover our many hunts, from deer & turkey to upland and waterfowl.
We'll be writing about all aspects of our hunts, and submitting them here for
your reading enjoyment. We hope you enjoy them, and maybe they'll spark
your interest to join us in person!

I haven't forgot about my journal.....I know there have been alot of people
curious about what Fur and Feather has been up to during the 2007 fall. Well
this year we have fought the weather from our early archery hunts until the end
of our rifle season. Western NE has had a fall that has been well above average.
During the pre-rut/rut hunts 80+ degrees were not that uncommon, along with
southern winds. Everyone knows what that does to daytime movement BUT saying
that we made up for those warm days when the temps dropped to normal.
This is the first year that we had a monetary fine set on bucks that didn't meet the 130" minimum and I think you will be able to see from our photos and #'s that it helped. We have let ALOT of deer walk this season that would have been taken in previous years. In turn that is going to make the upcoming years at Fur and Feather that much better! During our 2 prerut/rut archery hunts we ran a 67% opportunity (actual shots taken), and remember that is for 130"+ deer! That is strong for anywhere in the country!
After archery season we rolled on into the rifle season.....well mother nature threw in more upper 70's and in turn that affected our daytime movement. The rut was rolling like normal but our mature deer were not on their feet. People were seeing alot of 2.5's (110-120") chasing but the older mature deer were laying in the shade waiting for the cooler temps of dark to come before they got up. In the end we made the best out of a bad situation and moved up into the canyons where we could cover alot of ground. This was the first year that I can say we took full advantage of our canyon properties. At the end of rifle season we ended up taking 5 mature animals from the canyons!
Also this season we finally took advantage of the local pheasants! We are going to be offering more bird hunts in the up coming seasons. You can see that the pheasant population has turned up for Nebraska. Hopefully this is from good habitat, good management, and a great hatch!
Since the end of rifle season Britney and I have been recuperating and
preparing for the first duck hunters of the season. Luckily we've had some
serious fronts blow through and leave some ducks! This has been a strange season
so far for weather but like they say wait 15 min and the NE weather will change!
We still have some muzzleloaders that are going to SMOKE this year and several
duck hunters so keep checking in for new pics!
Good Hunting!

The last turkey hunters finished up the season May 13 here in Nebraska, and
we ended anthor successful season. Our finale #'s ended up with 33 gobblers
killed by 17 hunters. That ends up being 1.94 gobblers per hunter, that is the
kind of success we like to see! Here are a few pictures of some of our
success. Keep your eyes open also while watching the Outdoor Channel this year
b/c several of the birds taken this year at Fur and Feather were videoed and
should be shown over the
next year or so.
On to the next note while everyone was watching birds flop I was getting excited watching the horns develope on several of our deer! With all the moisture this spring it looks GREAT for this upcoming fall! We seem to have a growing herd of great Mulies this year up in the canyons. Hopefully through management we have added some age class to our herd and this in turn hopefully will show up in some serious BONE on a few bucks' head this fall!
Good Hunting,
