Whitetail
& Mule Deer
“Sitting there in the pre-dawn silence you are enjoying the solitude
and serenity of the Platte River. As daylight approaches you are in
awe at the thousands of ducks and geese working the river headed for
warmer grounds down south. Suddenly you are snapped back to the
reason why you are sitting here, when the frost covered cattail
gently moves as a doe eases into range and stops to scan her back
trail. Your weapon feels good in your hand as you prepare for what
follows.....”
Fur and Feather Outdoors feels that we are bringing an untouched
jewel to serious deer hunters. One trip to Maxwell, Nebraska and you
will see why we are so excited about our deer hunts! You will see
why you need to let that 100" deer walk. It will not take you long
to realize that you are hunting in an area where a deer of a
lifetime could be just a minute away. The time in the strategically
placed stands will fly by due to the fact of what is in the timber
with you. Fur and Feather limits our camps to 6 people a hunt to
keep the hunting pressure low to maximize every hunter’s
opportunity! The hunts are for one deer even though in Nebraska you
can get two deer tags. If you want a second deer there will be a fee
and the second deer has to be larger than the first. Also the deer
hunts are them same price for either a Whitetail or a Mule Deer,
plus no Trophy fees.
The typical deer hunt will start with an early wake up call. As you
are enjoying your continental breakfast we will decide what area of
the 20,000 ac you will hunt that day. This decision will be made
upon the wind direction and what type of deer (Whitetail or Mulie)
you are targeting. Well before daylight you will load up into your
guides vehicle and he will take you to the stand site. The stand
site will have been hung well in advance of your arrival by me,
Jason Edney the owner of Fur and Feather Outdoors. The early stand
placement results in a very fresh set, which will up the odds for
your success. Once you climb up into your perch the thought and care
of the strategic placement will be evident. The stand will either be
a comfortable lock-on with ladder sticks up to it, a high quality
ladder stand, a hidden tripod or a ground blind tucked back into
some brush. Your guide will back to pick you up at the desired time.
From your morning hunt we will take you back to the lodge and
regroup. After you are rejuvenated we will take you back to your
evening hunt. The evening hunt will either be a spot and stalk hunt
or a stand hunt, your choice. At dark you and the rest of the
hunters will met back at the lodge to discuss the days events. There
will be a well prepared meal waiting on you to top of the evening.
After you have wound down the day there will be a comfortable bed
waiting on you.
There will be four deer hunts offered: early season archery hunt,
pre rut/rut archery hunt, rifle hunt, and finally a late muzzle
loader hunt.
Early Season Archery: (Sept 15 thru Sept 21)
Don’t fall into the train of thought that the only time that you can
kill a Trophy Deer is during the rut. All deer are very susceptible
during this early stage. They can be very easy to pattern due to
their predictability. The deer will either be visiting a preferred
food source or a precious water source almost daily. Also during
this early season you will have a very good chance at getting
archery close to a mature Mule Deer. The Mule Deer can be very hard
to pattern but at this time of year they will be hitting water holes
trying to cool down. This hunt can have a very high success rate.
Pre rut/Rut Archery: (Late Oct thru rifle season)
These hunts are on a high demand due to the fact of what can happen
during the rut. During the rut a mature buck may show up from miles
away. During this hunt we will focus on rut sign, funnels and
finding the doe families. During this period calling and decoying
can add an exciting element, don’t forget your rattling horns and
grunt call! Hunting the rut speaks for itself so be prepared for a
exciting fast paced hunt!
Rifle hunts: (Early November)
Couple the rut with rifles and you are in for a great hunt.
Nebraska’s rifle season is 9 days and at least part of these 9 days
should fall during the rut. These 9 days will be split into two 4
day hunts. During the rifle hunt we will either be hunting on stand
or spot and stalking. The stand sites will be placed to take full
advantage of your rifles capabilities so be prepared to stretch your
shots out to 300 plus yards.
Late Season Muzzleloader: (Dec)
Again the focus will be put back on to food sources. The cold
weather will make our deer herd move. The deer will be trying to
gain as many calories as they can to put on weight to survive
winter. Plus if the timing is right you may find a doe that was not
bred the first time around. If the weather cooperates this can be a
hunt where a lot of deer can be seen. Plus you get the added range
of todays muzzleloaders!
